Key information about employment conditions, accommodation, transport and your first days of work in the Netherlands.
The essentials at a glance

Before leaving, confirm the position, hourly rate, schedule, how working hours are calculated, the cost of accommodation and the contact details of the person who will support you after arrival.

Start by checking the conditions of the offer

Working in the Netherlands can be a good way to gain experience and secure stable employment, but you should not make the decision based only on a short job advertisement. Before signing any documents, ask for a clear explanation of the most important conditions.

Confirm the exact location, duties, shift system, expected number of hours and whether the job requires specific experience, language skills or qualifications. Also ask whether the rate shown in the offer is gross, which deductions may apply and when wages are paid.

Do not be afraid to ask questions

A reliable recruiter should be able to explain the conditions in plain language and give you enough time to read the documents carefully.

Documents and information needed before departure

The document list depends on your nationality, the type of employment and the specific offer. You will usually need a valid identity document, contact details, a bank account number and the information required to prepare your contract.

Do not send photographs of your documents to random people or through unverified messaging services. Make sure you are speaking with an official agency representative and understand why your data is being collected.

  • check the expiry date of your identity card or passport,
  • make secure copies of the most important documents,
  • save the recruiter’s and coordinator’s telephone numbers,
  • read the contract before accepting it.

What is employee accommodation like?

Accommodation provided with a job abroad is intended to make commuting and everyday life manageable. Standards differ by location, so before leaving, ask for a description of the property, the number of people sharing a room and the rules for using shared spaces.

Ask whether bedding, basic kitchen equipment, a washing machine and internet access are available. Confirm the accommodation costs and how they will be deducted or settled.

Save the accommodation address on your phone and take a screenshot as well. It will be useful if you lose internet access while travelling.

Transport to the Netherlands and commuting to work

Before departure, establish whether you arrange the journey to the Netherlands yourself or can use transport organised by the agency. It is equally important to know how you will travel from the accommodation to the workplace.

Depending on the location, this may involve group transport, a company car, a bicycle or sharing a ride with other employees. Check who organises the commute, whether it involves a fee and what time you need to be ready before your shift.

Your first days after arrival

After arrival, you should receive information about the accommodation, the job and the organisation of your first working day. At the workplace, you may complete job-specific and health-and-safety training. Do not worry if everything is not immediately clear — ask questions and make sure you understand the instructions.

1. Confirm your arrival

Let the coordinator know that you have reached the accommodation.

2. Check the details

Save the starting time, workplace address and commuting arrangements.

3. Report problems immediately

Do not wait until a small accommodation or workplace issue becomes a bigger problem.

What should you pack?

Bring comfortable clothes, basic toiletries, any medication you take regularly, a towel, charger and power bank. If safety footwear is not provided, confirm which type is required. A small amount of food and water can also be useful on the first day.

Specific information is the best preparation. The more details you confirm before departure, the calmer your first days of work in the Netherlands will be.
